Japan Oil Development Company (JODCO) sponsors the PI Solar Car Project collaborated with Japan’s Tokai University.  The Project provides wonderful opportunities to invest in the ongoing education of Science, Engineering & Technology, and encourages both teamwork and motivation to progress this initiative.

Back in January 2012, JODCO invited the ‘Tokai Challenger’, winner of the 2009 World Solar Challenge Race in Australia, to JODCO’s display booth at the 2012 World Future Energy Summit (WFES).  This of course drew the attention of many visitors including a personal visit from His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.  JODCO then put forward a proposal to develop a solar car as part of an education programme for PI, the first step which has led to the development of a successful collaboration between PI, Tokai and JODCO.

The project has grown in success. In January 2014, the new model of the ‘Tokai Challenger’, winner of the 2011 World Solar Challenge was displayed at JODCO’s booth during the 2014 WFES, test runs have been made at Masdar City Festival as well as workshops for students and faculties. In February 2014, when His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited Japan, His Highness paid a visit to Tokai University and UAE students studying there explained the developments on the solar car project.

PI and Tokai continue these collaborative works in Japan and Abu Dhabi, both are confident that the project is advancing and will become a great success.  From May to July 2014 one faculty and 9 students of PI spent two months at Tokai campus in Japan to build up their knowledge on solar cars, visited body & major parts factories and other universities working on solar car projects.  They also visited our office in Tokyo and operation sites in Niigata prefecture north of Japan.

PI will enter the ‘Abu Dhabi Solar Challenge’ – a solar car race which is scheduled for January 2015, with their own solar car, a first of its kind in the Middle East.

JODCO is committed to the development and continued success of this project and looks forward to an exciting future working alongside PI and Tokai.
