The Petroleum Institute Solar Car Project is designed to familiarize students with the use of cutting-edge technologies and the applications of various engineering concepts. The goal of the project is to design, manufacture, test and race a solar car at the competitive level.
The Petroleum Institute Solar Car Team is constantly faced with the question: why is a university built to serve the oil industry interested in building a solar car?
The answer stems from the very foundations of this institute. The Petroleum Institute is a university first and foremost, and there is no denying the importance of hands-on projects that apply the theories taught in classes. The solar car project serves as a perfect stage to apply these theories in a manner that is beneficial to the university, its students and society. While the university is geared towards serving the oil industry, developing and nurturing the knowledge, understanding and talents of its future engineers is its ultimate goal.
PI has embarked on this project to achieve the following specific goals:
- Introduce a hands-on and practical component to the education to compliment the classroom and laboratory learning.
- Provide an exciting competition in which engineering students can compete and represent PI and the UAE. This international competition is referred to as the “brain sport”.
- Teach PI students about energy efficiency and renewable energy which are key areas of emphasis for the UAE, and which are becoming increasingly more important in the oil and gas industries.
